Just Gentle:

Incense Burner

This piece stems from the term 'Bulldyke', a term used by Black masc lesbians in the early 20th century. Black lesbians, especially dark skinned masc lesbians, have a whole different experience with gender and sexuality. This results in many different terms that are used, and should only be used, by the Black lesbian community. Bulls are seen as more aggressive than cows just like how many masc Black lesbians are demonized more compared to nonblack lesbians.

I am not the first one to say that masculinity is not inherently toxic. Just because a person presents in a more masc way or identifies as masc doesn't mean they are more aggressive, dominant, etc.

A Fluid Journey

This weaving depicts the journey of gender identity. The colors of the weaving are a variety of blues, black, white, and a hand dyed cherry red, representing gender expression. The woven geometric patterns represent a journey of self discovery, inspired by actual African Kente cloth weaving patterns while the middle section is more unconventional and personal to the individual. There are four small spikes coming out of the weaving which represent the rebellious nature of gender identity/fluidity. Gender is a social construct, thinking of your identity outside of that binary can be really difficult since there is very little language that describes our experience.

The Signs You Followed

When doing my show surrounding the home, I wanted to capture the 'before'. Before you get that apartment approval, before you receive the good news, before you reach your safe place. People tend to look towards outside sources to affirm they are making positive life choices. Divination, nature, tarot, your ancestors, and even your own intuition give you signs to follow. This painting is about following your gut, literally, and your guides towards a safer place.
